How NMEA 2000 Works
The NMEA 2000 backbone is a continuous cable run through the boat. At each device location, a T-connector branches off the backbone to a short drop cable connecting to the device. Terminator caps (2 ohm resistors) cap each end of the backbone. One power connector on the backbone powers the entire network — typically fused at 3A from your electronics fuse block.
Device capacity: a standard NMEA 2000 backbone supports up to 50 devices. Most small boats will connect 3–8: chartplotter, fish finder, VHF radio, engine gateway, AIS, autopilot, and possibly wind and depth sensors. Maximum backbone length is 100 meters (327 ft) — far more than any boat under 100 ft needs.
