Satellite Messenger vs VHF Radio
VHF radios communicate with any vessel or Coast Guard station within radio range (15–25 miles typically, unlimited with a repeater). VHF DSC emergency calls are detected automatically by USCG and other vessels. But VHF requires another radio in range to receive the call. Satellite messengers communicate globally via satellite — no other vessel needed to relay the signal. For offshore and remote lake situations, satellite is more reliable for emergency communication. For near-shore and inshore applications, VHF remains the primary safety communication tool and satellite is a backup layer.
