A fish finder turns the water below your boat from a blank mystery into a readable map — depth, bottom hardness, structure, bait and, yes, the fish themselves. This is the plain-English guide to how they work, what every spec actually means, and how to pick the right one for the way you fish.
Modern units have gotten dramatically better and, at the entry level, dramatically cheaper. But the spec sheets are a wall of acronyms — CHIRP, DI, SI, kHz, GPS combo, live sonar. Strip the jargon away and a fish finder is three things working together, and a handful of choices that decide whether you'll love it or leave it in the garage.
A fish finder pings sound at the bottom, times the echo to calculate depth, and paints what it hears as a moving picture. Everything else is refinement of that idea.
01The three parts of every fish finder
No matter the brand or price, the system breaks down the same way:
- The display (head unit). The screen at the helm or bow that does the computing and draws the image. Sizes run from pocket-sized 3.5″ units up to 16″ helm displays.
- The transducer. The puck that sends and receives the sonar pulses. This is the heart of the system — the screen can only show what the transducer hears, so a cheap transducer on an expensive display is a wasted display.
- The power & (often) GPS. A fused 12V feed runs the unit; most modern finders also bake in a GPS receiver for marking spots and basic charting.
02How the sonar actually works
The transducer fires a cone of sound into the water and listens for the return. Hard bottom bounces a strong echo; soft mud absorbs more and returns a weak one; a fish's air-filled swim bladder reflects a small, distinct blip. The unit times each echo, calculates distance, and scrolls the result right-to-left so the newest reading is always on the right edge.
Two ideas decide image quality: frequency and sonar type. Low frequencies (50–83 kHz) shoot a wide cone that reaches deep but blurs detail; high frequencies (200 kHz and the MHz imaging bands) give razor detail but cover less water. 03Reading the screen — the 60-second version
The single biggest beginner hurdle is trusting the picture. Three anchors get you 90% there:
- The bottom is the thick continuous line. A thin, sharp line is hard bottom (rock, gravel); a fuzzy, thick band is soft (mud, weed).
- Fish show as arches in 2D sonar — a full arch means the fish passed through your whole cone. On imaging views they look like bright dots or commas.
- Bait appears as clouds or "balls" of speckle. Find the bait and the predators are usually close.

Beginner modes draw cartoon fish to be friendly, but they guess. As soon as you're comfortable, switch to raw 2D/arch view — you'll catch more by reading the real data than by trusting the little fish.
04The specs that actually matter
Screen size & resolution
Bigger screens aren't just nicer — they let you split CHIRP, down and side views side by side without squinting. On a kayak or tiller boat a 5–7″ unit is the sweet spot; center consoles benefit from 9″ and up. Resolution matters as much as size: more pixels means cleaner arches and crisper imaging.
Power (watts)
More transmit power punches the signal deeper and through clutter. Inland anglers in under 50 ft rarely need to worry; offshore and deep-lake anglers should.
Frequency & cone angle
Wider cones (low kHz) cover more water but show less detail; narrow cones (high kHz) are the opposite. CHIRP sonar sweeps a range of frequencies in each pulse instead of one, which is why CHIRP units separate two close fish into two arches where old single-frequency units smear them into one — the difference is covered in CHIRP vs. traditional sonar.
GPS & mapping
A built-in GPS lets you drop and return to waypoints and follow contour maps. The three big chart ecosystems are Garmin Navionics+, Lowrance C-MAP and Humminbird LakeMaster/CoastMaster. All three also let you record your own 1-foot contours as you idle around.

- Standalone sonar. Just depth and fish, sometimes a basic GPS plot. Cheap, simple, great as a first unit or kayak finder.

08Installing it (the short version)
A clean install is three jobs: mount the display where you can see it, run fused power to the battery, and mount the transducer where it stays in clean water at speed. Transom mounting is the default for most small boats; imaging and live sonar usually go on a trolling-motor mount. 09Common beginner mistakes
- Buying the screen, skimping the transducer. The transducer determines what you can see. Match it to the views you want.
- Mounting the transducer over a strake or behind a rivet line. Turbulent ("aerated") water blanks the sonar at speed.
- Leaving it on Auto forever. Auto is fine to start, but learning manual sensitivity and range is what separates a useful unit from a frustrating one.
- Paying for live sonar you won't use. It's transformative for some styles and overkill for others — decide honestly with the live-sonar guide.
