Transducer Types: Transom, Thru-Hull & Motor

Transom, thru-hull, in-hull or trolling-motor — the four families, what each is best for, and how to match a transducer to the views you actually want.

The transducer is the heart of your fish finder — it decides both what you can see and how you'll mount it. Picking the right type for your boat is one of the most important sonar decisions you'll make, and it's easy once you know the four families.

01Transom-mount (the default)

Bolted to the back of the boat just below the waterline, transom transducers are the standard for most small-to-mid boats: inexpensive, easy to install yourself, and easy to adjust or replace. The trade-off is that they sit in water that can become turbulent at speed, so placement (height, angle, clean water) matters — get that right and they perform excellently for the vast majority of anglers.

  • Best for: aluminum boats, bass boats, runabouts, most trailered rigs.

02Thru-hull

A thru-hull transducer mounts through a hole drilled in the hull, so its face reads through nothing but water. That delivers the best high-speed and deep-water performance, which is why offshore and larger boats favor them. On a planing hull you'll usually add a fairing block to keep the face level with the water flow. They come in bronze (for fiberglass) and plastic housings, and installation is more involved (and permanent).

03In-hull (shoot-thru)

An in-hull transducer is epoxied inside a solid fiberglass hull and pings straight through it. No holes, no drag, and easy to relocate — but you sacrifice a little sensitivity, it can't read water temperature, and it only works through solid fiberglass (not cored or aluminum hulls).

  • Best for: solid-glass hulls where you want a clean, penetration-free install.

04Trolling-motor mount

Imaging and forward-facing live-sonar transducers commonly mount on the trolling motor — the barrel or shaft — where they get clean water and can be aimed by turning the motor. Some imaging transducers clamp to the foot; live-sonar transducers use dedicated shaft mounts. This is the home of side/down imaging and LiveScope / MEGA Live / ActiveTarget setups.

  • Best for: imaging and live sonar on bass/walleye and multispecies rigs.
One transducer rarely does everything

A basic 2D/CHIRP transducer, a 3-in-1 imaging transducer (CHIRP + down + side), and a forward-facing live-sonar transducer are different units. Many boats run two: a transom or thru-hull for 2D/charts, and a trolling-motor transducer for imaging or live sonar.

05Matching the transducer to your sonar

The transducer must support the views you want:

  • 2D / CHIRP only — depth, arches, bottom. Comes on entry units.
  • 3-in-1 (CHIRP + down + side) — the mainstream imaging transducer (Garmin GT-series, Lowrance Active Imaging, Humminbird MEGA). What most combo buyers want.
  • Live / forward-facing — always a separate transducer (and often a module) for real-time imaging.

Transducers are also brand-specific in their connectors — a Garmin transducer won't plug into a Lowrance unit. Match the transducer to your display's brand and the views you're paying for. A unit that ships a 3-in-1 transducer in the box is the simplest path:
