Bottom hardness is one of the most useful pieces of information your fish finder provides — and most anglers don't know how to read it. The thickness and intensity of the bottom return on 2D sonar tells you exactly what the bottom is made of, which tells you where to look for fish.

How Bottom Hardness Shows on Sonar

When a sonar pulse hits the bottom, some energy is absorbed (soft materials absorb more) and some is reflected back to the transducer. Hard materials (rock, gravel, hard clay, shell) reflect more energy — producing a thick, bright, strong bottom return on the 2D sonar display. Soft materials (silt, mud, loose sand) absorb more energy — producing a thin, dim, weak return.

The double echo: On very hard bottoms (rock, gravel), you'll sometimes see a second, fainter echo below the main bottom line. This is the sonar signal bouncing off the bottom, returning to the transducer, bouncing off the hull or surface, back down to the bottom, and returning a second time. Only hard bottoms produce a second echo strong enough to display.

What Different Bottom Types Look Like

  • Hard rock: Thick, bright, sharp bottom line with double echo below. Strong return. Fish often relate directly to rocky bottom or suspended just above it.
  • Gravel/hard clay: Moderately thick, bright return. No double echo typically. Good indicator of a productive feeding zone where crawfish and minnows are common.
  • Sand: Moderate thickness, medium brightness. Productive during active feeding periods when baitfish move onto sandy flats.
  • Soft mud/silt: Thin, dim, fuzzy return. Low fish-holding quality unless adjacent to harder bottom — the contrast between soft and hard bottom is where fish transition between areas.

Using Bottom Hardness to Find Fish

The most productive fishing spots are often where bottom composition changes — the transition from soft to hard is where baitfish congregate (they prefer harder bottom) and where predators intercept them. When scanning with side imaging, look for color changes in the bottom return rather than structure shapes — lighter returns = harder bottom, darker returns = softer bottom. Mark the edges of composition changes as waypoints.
